Tuesday, November 22 - BERLIN

Transfers from Berlin Tegel Airport to the hotel in Berlin will be provided to all tour guests arriving today by air. Accommodations at the deluxe KEMPINSKI BRISTOL HOTEL located on famous Kurfürstendamm in the center of West Berlin in the heart of the city’s elegant shopping district. Balance of morning and early afternoon at leisure. At 5:00 PM, welcome reception and dinner at the hotel’s KU-DAMM ECK restaurant.

This evening: CONCERT (Berlin Philharmonic - 8:00 PM). The program: works by George Frideric Handel, Domenico Scarlatti and Antonio Caldara – all composers in Rome at the beginning of the 18th century. Cecilia Bartoli, mezzo-soprano, and the Orchestra La Scintilla Zurich.

Wednesday, November 23 - BERLIN

This morning a tour of Berlin's historic center including the boulevard UNTER DEN LINDEN, HUMBOLDT UNIVERSITY, with stops at the BERLIN DOM (cathedral) with time to visit the recently reopened TOMB of the House of Hohenzollern in the crypt of the cathedral; followed by a visit to the historic NIKOLAI QUARTER. Next visit the PERGAMON MUSEUM, the famous archaeological museum best known for the superbly preserved Gate of Ishtar, the Hellenistic Pergamon altar dating back to 180-160 BC and the Market Gate of Miletus. Continuing our sightseeing, visit the EGYPTIAN MUSEUM, now again located on MUSEUM ISLAND in the ALTES MUSEUM (OLD MUSEUM) exhibiting one of the world's most important collections of ancient Egyptian art. On display are such works as the famous bust of Queen Nefertiti, the portrait of Queen Tiy and the "Berlin Green Head", the most significant work of the late period (300 BC) made of greenish schist. Included in our tour will also be the temple gate of Kalabsha (20 BC) and the great Column Hall from the pyramid temple of King Sahure (2400 BC). Luncheon at Restaurant FRIEDRICHS, located on Friedrichstrasse.

Following lunch, a stroll along FRIEDRICHSTRASSE and across GENDARMENMARKT In the years since the fall of the Wall, MITTE DISTRICT has undergone a radical facelift. Friedrichstrass, with its many new buildings and renovated architectural monuments, is a popular place for a stroll. The three buildings which make up the FRIEDRICHSTADT-PASSAGEN are the most striking examples of the new urban architecture which has changed the appearance of this famous street. LINDENCORSO, KULTURKAUFHAUS, ROSMARIN-KARREE, HOFGARTEN - there is hardly a block without new, representative office and residential buildings. Over 100,000 sq. meters of retail space have sprung up around Friedrichstrasse over the past ten years.

Thursday, November 24 - BERLIN

This morning tour West Berlin passing the KAISER WILHELM MEMORIAL CHURCH, the SCHÖNEBERG CITY HALL where John F. Kennedy gave his famous “Ich bin ein Berliner” speech, the LUFTBRÜCKE MONUMENT, commemorating the Berlin Airlift; the OLYMPIC STADIUM where Jesse Owens won his gold medals. Lunch at MAXIMILIAN’S PAULANER RESTAURANT, Friedrichstrasse at Kronenstrasse, specializing in typical Bavarian fare. The afternoon is free to continue exploring Berlin on your own. Perhaps taste the gourmet delicacies on the 6th floor of the largest department store on the continent, the Kaufhaus des Westens (KDW).

This evening: Mozart’s THE MAGIC FLUTE (Deutsche Oper Berlin - 7:30 PM) with Michaele Kaune, Reinhard Hagen, Clemens Bieber, Markus Brück; Michail Jurowski, conducting. Chorus: Ulrich Paetzholdt, Production: Günter Krämer, Sets and Costumes: Andreas Reinhardt.

Friday, November 25 - BERLIN

This morning pass through the BRANDENBURG GATE to see the REICHSTAG (German Parliament) with the great Glass Dome designed by Sir Norman Foster. A walking tour follows through one of the largest urban renewal activities in Berlin since the fall of the wall, namely the POTSDAMER PLATZ area. Included will be a visit to the SONY CENTER, part of the new city center surrounding Potsdamer Platz, including the function rooms of the former, deluxe Hotel Bellevue which have been dutifully restored and integrated into the Sony Center. Then a walk across MARLENE DIETRICH PLATZ, past the musical theater and the shopping mall.

Luncheon at the historic ADLON HOTEL (the famous “Grand Hotel" of the movie, novel and musical) overlooking the Brandenburg Gate -- recently reopened, where crowned heads and celebrities like Chaplin, Caruso, Dietrich and countless others once stayed.

This evening: Giordano’s ANDREA CHENIER (Deutsche Oper Berlin - 7:30 PM) with Maria Guleghina, Zvetan Michailov, Lado Ataneli; Pier Giorgio Morandi, conducting. Chorus: Ulrich Paetzholdt, Production: John Dew, Sets: Peter Sykora, Costumes: José Manuel Vazquez.

Saturday, November 26 - BERLIN

Our first visit this morning will be at the BRÖHAN MUSEUM, Berlin’s foremost museum of ART NOUVEAU/ JUNGENDSTIL, ART DECO, FUNCTIONALISM and the style of the BERLIN SECESSION. On display are works of such famous artists as Henry van de Velde, the Belgian Art Nouveau artist, and Josef Hoffmann, the Viennese Secession artist as well as paintings of the Berlin Secession painters Hans Baluschek, Karl Hagemeister, Willy Jaeckel and Walter Leistikow; Paul Thiersch and Edgar Brandt are represented with typical works of the Art Deco period. Luncheon at LUISEN-BRÄU in Charlottenburg with typical Berlin fare.

Following lunch, a tour of the west wing of CHARLOTTENBURG PALACE built in 1695 by Frederick III for his wife Queen Sophie Charlotte to a design by Johann Arnold Nehring. The tour will include a visit to the living quarters of Frederick the Great (1740-1786) and his personal painting collection.

This evening: Puccini’s TOSCA (Staatsoper Unter den Linden). Cast: Michèle Crider, Andrew Richards, Andrzej Dobber; Dan Ettinger, conducting. Chorus: Detlef Steffen, Production: Carl Riha, Sets and Costumes: Wolfgang Bellach.

Sunday, November 27 - BERLIN

This morning leave by private motorcoach for a tour of two very different museums. First a guided tour of the PICTURE GALLERY/GEMÄLDEGALERIE. Founded in 1830, it is home to one of the world's finest collections of European art from the 13th to the 18th century. The collection, displayed in some 53 rooms, includes masterpieces by van Eyck, Breughel, Dürer, Raphael, Titian, Caravaggio, Rembrandt and Rubens. Next, a visit to the stunning HAMBURGER BAHNHOF/MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART. The museum, part of the NATIONAL GALLERY OF ART, is housed in a former railway station dating from the 1840s. The collection contains works from Berlin's State Museums as well as items belonging to the private collector, Erich Marx. At the core of the Marx collection are works by such internationally renowned artists as Andy Warhol, Cy Twombly, Robert Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein, Anselm Kiefer and Joseph Beuys. Luncheon at BRASSERIE AM GENDARMENMARKT on Taubenstrasse.

This evening: Wagner’s DIE MEISTERSINGER VON NÜRNBERG (Staatsoper Unter den Linden). Cast: Robert Holl, René Pape, Andreas Schmidt, Ben Heppner, Anna Samuil; Daniel Barenboim, conducting. Chorus: Eberhard Friedrich, Production: Harry Kupfer; Sets: Hans Schavernoch, Costumes: Buki Shiff.

Monday, November 28 - DEPARTURE

There will be transfers to the airport for everyone leaving Berlin by air today.

CANCELLATION OF TOUR:

LAND ARRANGEMENTS: For cancellation by the client, these charges will apply: Cancellations received 60 days or more prior to tour commencement = $200.00 per person; 59-31 days prior = 50% of land arrangements price; less than 31 days prior =100% of land arrangements price; no appearance/no written notice = 100% of the land arrangements price. No refunds will be made for any part of the tour package, such as sightseeing, meals, performances or transfers, which are voluntarily omitted by any tour member; the tour is sold as a package. We must strictly adhere to our cancellation policy to offset costs incurred prior to the commencement of the tour.

AIR TRANSPORTATION: Cancellation of AIR FLIGHTS will be subject to the cancellation policy of the airline.

TRIP INSURANCE: WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND TRIP CANCELLATION INSURANCE. An application will be included with our acknowledgment of your reservation. Should it become necessary for you to cancel due to illness (but not business reasons) the policy may cover your losses (subject to insurance terms).
